Advanced Instrumentation for the General Practice Dental Hygienist

Course Number: 569

Alternative Patient and Clinician Positioning

Alternative positions may include 1 o'clock and 3 o'clock in addition to traditional 8-12 o'clock positions. Some patients need a semi-upright rather than full supine position (respiratory issues, severe gag, late pregnancy, limited supine tolerance).

Regardless of clock position or chair angulation:

  • Maintain a neutral spine

  • Face the working area

  • Keep the shoulders relaxed

Combine alternative positions with appropriate instrument design, glove fit, and fulcrums so access does not come at the cost of cumulative trauma.11,22
